What Are Spider Veins?

Devider
Unlike Varicose Veins, the definitive cause of spider veins has not been proven, but heredity, local trauma, hormonal levels, and occupations requiring prolonged standing are believed to be contributing factors. Spider veins become more numerous with age, and like varicose veins, are more common in women.

Spider veins are formed from areas of faulty function of reticular veins. Reticular veins are the major collecting veins just under the surface of the skin. They, in turn, drain in to the system of veins that can become varicose veins. Spider veins look like red or purple sunbursts or web patterns. Spider veins are also referred to as ‘telangiectasias”. They usually pose no health hazard but may produce a dull aching, stinging, or burning in the legs after standing for long periods of time. If you have spider veins, call Alaska Vein Care to discuss treatment options.

As mentioned before, doctors have yet to find the cause of spider veins. If you have spider veins, you probably could care less about what causes them, and care only about getting rid of them.

Spider Vein Treatment

Devider

Unlike varicose veins, where procedures like RF and Venaseal have become the go-to treatment, the best solution for the vast majority of spider veins is still injections. These are injections known as “surface sclerotherapy.” In this case, phlebologists choose from a variety of effective injectable agents (“sclerosants”) to treat spider veins. Every patient varies in the success of a sclerotherapy session, but results are typically commensurate with your phlebologist’s experience, and his/her ability to choose the best treatment protocol based on your skin type, and the size and location of your spider veins.

Most patients will require two or three treatments to get satisfactory results. Unlike hypertonic saline (which most modern vein specialists do NOT use), today's sclerosants do not cause severe pain or stinging, and have a very low incidence of side effects. Insurance companies generally do not cover the cost of spider vein treatment, so be sure to discuss payment options with Alaska Vein Care's billing staff.
