Causes of Restless Legs Syndrome

Devider
Current theories suggest that there are two types of restless legs syndrome: primary and secondary. The primary form is likely a brain disorder and can only be treated with targeted medications. It is the secondary form that seems to be attributable to the legs themselves, namely, the cycle of daily fluid shifts which resulting in swelling of the legs due to conditions such as chronic varicose vein disease.

Studies have shown that 80% of patients who have restless legs syndrome, and varicose vein disease simultaneously, will get relief from their restless legs symptoms following successful treatment of their varicose veins. That's where we come in. Call Alaska Vein Care in Anchorage, Juneau, Kenai, and Wasilla, AK, if you suspect that your varicose veins are causing your restless legs syndrome.

Treatments

EVLT
With EVLT (Endovenous Laser Therapy), our treatment goal is to restore normal circulation in the leg. This is accomplished by closing the refluxing vein and eliminating locations where blood can pool (large varicose veins). In this technique, a thin glass laser fiber is inserted into the refluxing vein.

As the energy from the laser is delivered through the fiber and out the tip, the fiber is slowly withdrawn and the vein closes behind it. This is done in the office under local anesthetic. EVLT has emerged as the most popular varicose vein treatment technique in the country due to its high rate of success and excellent safety record.
MICRO-PHLEBECTOMY
Bulging varicose veins just under the skin are removed by a second procedure done at the same time as the EVLT called micro-phlebectomy or ambulatory phlebectomy. This procedure, like EVLT, is done in the office under local anesthetic. A series of tiny punctures are made over the affected area and a special hook is used to remove the loops of vein. Cosmetic results are usually excellent.

SCLEROTHERAPY
Some varicose veins are best treated by injection of a medicine, called asclerosant, which causes the varicose vein to close through a scarring process which occurs on the inside of the vein wall.

Restless legs syndrome is a poorly understood phenomenon which results in a deep, uncomfortable sensation of the legs. It is not painful per se, but can still make you miserable. People variably describe restless leg syndrome as an internal feeling of crawling insects, or an intense, unpleasant tickling that feels like it's inside the leg as opposed to on the skin. These sensations result in an overwhelming compulsion to move your legs, which renders immediate relief. Symptoms are usually worse in the evening or at bedtime, when you lie down or put your feet up. Many patients can only find relief by pacing the floor at night, resulting in a poor night's sleep and cranky mornings.
