How Obesity Can Affect Varicose Veins
Did you know that almost 43% of adults in America are considered obese? According to the CDC it is a growing issue as that number seems to grow every year. The risks associated with obesity range from diabetes, heart disease, stroke, decreased emotional health and even varicose veins.
At Alaska Vein Care, leg health is extremely important to us. Varicose veins can start as a cosmetic issue, but have a high probability of causing serious discomfort and medical problems for patients.
How does being over weight or obese cause varicose veins?
According to Dr. Aquino at SF Vein Center, excess body weight causes the valves in our blood vessels to fail prematurely. Varicose veins develop when the valves within our blood vessels stop working properly. These tiny valves prevent blood from flowing backwards as it is circulated back to the heart. However, when these valves fail it allows blood to pool up and cause the veins to become large, unsightly, and sometimes extremely painful.
Excessive weight can mask the problem
Not only can obesity contribute to vein disease, but the additional fat tissue can cover up swollen blood vessels. This can cause malfunctioning veins to go unnoticed and develop into more serious problems.
Get active to reduce the risk of varicose veins
A sedentary lifestyle not only contributes to obesity, but is a known risk factor for vein disease even in non-obese patients. Maintaining one position for an extended period of time doesn’t create the proper amount of motion to keep blood flowing in a healthy way. As we sit or stand for long periods of time, so does the blood in our legs as it fights gravity back to our heart.
Ways to ease the problem:
Losing weight can be a hard battle to fight. It can take months and even years to see the results you may want. Working with your healthcare provider to establish a weight goal is the first step. It can also be beneficial to enlist the help of a fitness coach to encourage you and provide specific technique advice.
In the meantime, elevating the legs 3-4 times during the day can help calm the effects of varicose veins. It’s also beneficial to alternate between a standing and seated position if possible.
