HOW CAN I TELL IF LEG ACHES ARE DUE TO VARICOSE VEINS?

Not All Varicose Veins Cause Serious Pain Or Have Visible Symptoms

Some varicose veins have no specific symptoms such as aching or pain. Alaska Vein Care receives referrals from amazing family practice providers, emergency room providers, and OBGYN providers.  Included in these referrals, we see a few common diagnosis's such as leg aches, or leg pain. Even if enlarged veins are not visible, underlying varicose vein problems may still contribute to aches and pain in the legs.

Some good signs that leg aches are due to varicose veins are:
  • Restless Legs
  • Throbbing pain in the legs
  • Leg cramps
  • Itching of the legs - especially near any large veins
  • Darkened areas on the skin
  • Thickening or discoloration of the skin near the ankles

What Can Cause Leg Aches and Pains?

Most leg pains are caused by wear and tear to the joints, muscles, ligaments or tendons in the leg. Some types of leg pain can be due to lower spine problems or inflammation of nerves (neuropathy) or muscles (myalgia). Leg pain can be caused by blood clots, Varicose Veins, Spider Veins or poor arterial circulation. In some people there can be multiple causes occurring at the same time such as pain in the groin from hip arthritis and also from a faulty Varicose Vein in the groin. There are many potential causes of leg discomfort, including those that are readily apparent, such as sprains, sports injuries, shin splints, or back problems. Other causes may not be as easily identified, particularly those related to vascular issues such as poor circulation or varicose veins. Night cramps refer to muscular contractions that usually occur in the legs in the middle of the night or early in the morning and awake the person. Many have to get out of bed to obtain relief. Sometimes the pain is severe. These pains originate in the muscles and not in the veins. Treatment of venous disease often is followed by relief of the cramps, but not always. Also the severity of Varicose Veins does not directly correlate with the severity of symptoms that a patient might experience. Some patients with very large Varicose Veins have no symptoms whilst other patients with quite small Varicose or even Spider Veins can have quite severe symptoms such as pain.

  • Leg Heaviness

Visible signs of vein disease range from spider veins, varicose veins, swollen legs, to skin changes including darkening, thickening or ulceration of the tissues around the ankles.
