Evaluation

Following a physical examination and brief history, the modern evaluation for varicose vein disease is based entirely on the wonders of ultrasound technology.  At Alaska Vein Care we use state-of-the-art  ultrasound with color flow Doppler to determine the anatomy of the patient’s leg veins as well as the direction of blood flow.  From this study we create a schematic—referred to as mapping-- which permits us to determine the very best way to solve the problem. We do this at the first visit and the whole evaluation is performed in one location.   Patients leave the office with a full understanding of their specific problem as well as the treatment plan.

Sonogram Example Images

Above is an example of color flow Doppler. The blue image is the great saphenous vein as shown in cross section with normal flow towards the heart. If reflux were present, the blood would be flowing in the opposite direction and would appear red. Reflux is what causes varicose veins.
Above is an example of a dilated great saphenous vein due to varicose vein disease as seen in cross section. This vein measures more than a centimeter in diameter—an indication of severe varicose vein disease-- where as a healthy vein would be less than .45 centimeters.
